About the Berwyn Mountains

The Berwyn Mountains are a beautiful area of North Wales that are often overshadowed by the Snowdonia National Park which sits to the west of the Berwyn Mountains. The Berwyn Mountains remain relatively unknown – but this is one of their greatest assets. Unlike the Snowdonia National Park which sometimes feels a little crowded, you can often walk for miles in the Berwyn Mountains without seeing another person.

Exploring the Berwyn Mountains, you will find spectacular waterfalls, dramatic rivers, wonderful views, wildlife and small friendly villages. There are also fantastic mountain biking and on road cycling routes to explore.

Where Are the Berwyn mountains

The Berwyn Mountains roughly stretch from Llangollen in the east, along the Dee Valley to Bala in the west. The highest peak is Cadair Berwyn, at 830 metres, but there are 24 peaks above 600 metres that are waiting to be explored.

The area is very scarcely populated. The main villages are Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Corwen, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and Llangynog. But in between the villages are miles of walks to explore. The larger towns of Llangollen and Bala are also within easy reach.

Berwyn Mountains things to do

There is plenty to keep you busy in the area. There are two specific walks which take in the Berwyn Mountains – the North Berwyn Way and the Dee Valley Way. You can read more about these walks here.
