Nature, birding and bird watching in North Wales

We are in the middle of the Berwyn Range which is a national nature reserve. Lake Vyrnwy is a great spot for birdwatching, has an RSPB shop, nice walks and a good cafe. There are also various horse riding centres locally. A visit to world renowned Chester Zoo is a good way to entertain the kids and is only 50 minutes away. Closer to home, if you are really lucky you may see some of the polecats which live in the valley or the lizards who live in our dry stone wall!

Berwyn National Nature Reserve

The nature reserve is vast – covering 8000 hectares and is great for bird watching and birding. Good for upland birds.

Birdwatching at Lake Vyrnwy

You should be able to hear pied flycatchers and redstarts, dippers nesting by the streams and goosanders bobbing on the water. Look up and maybe you’ll spot a peregrine hunting. Good cafe and RSPB information centre.

Chester Zoo

Consistently voted one of the best zoos in the world. With over 11,000 animals at the last count.
